A report of the class trip to London
Our form, the 10a of the Realschule in Löningen, went on a trip to London. On 7th September we started our class trip at eight o’clock pm. Then we collected a class from Gütersloh, which had the same idea to travel to London. After a long bus + ferry trip we visited Canterbury. It was very interesting to see the big cathedral. When we arrived at London we went to our hostel which wasn’t very nice. I have never seen such a bad room like the one we had in the hostel! YUCK!
First we went to Sainsbury’s and bought some food. After that we went to Victoria Station by underground. It’s a very big station in London and the best thing is that you can go to a lot of famous sights from there. We saw Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament with the Big Ben, Westminster Abbey and the London Eye which is 135m high. It was getting dark and the lights went on. I’ve never had such a beautiful view from up there! After the London Eye we went to Piccadilly Circus which is a very big square with a lot of lights. There is a big statue which is called “Eros”. It is named after the Roman god of love. He has got bow and arrow and when you are hit by an arrow, you fall in love with the next person you see. Fortunately I wasn’t hit – just imagine you see your teacher first!
The next day we made a sight seeing tour by bus which was very interesting. We saw many famous sights like St. Paul’s Cathedral or the Tower of London. After the tour we went to Hampton Court which was Henry VIII’s palace. It is a big palace with a wonderful garden and a maze (labyrinth) in it! Later we all had a look at Harrods, a very famous, big and expensive shop. You can buy there nearly everything. It was really nice there.
On Wednesday we started a “race”: which group is the first at the Tower of London. (only by the way: the teachers were the winners) After a few minutes we visited the Tower which was very great because we saw the Crown Jewels, the funny guards (the Beefeaters), the crows and many weapons. After the Tower we went to Greenwich by ship, visited the National Maritime Museum and went to the zero meridian. We had a brilliant view of the Docklands from up the hill. Unfortunately they haven’t finished restoring the Cutty Sark, which burnt down some years ago.
The next day we had free time and went to the New Wembley Stadium which is the biggest one I’ve ever seen in my life. We couldn’t go in because there was a concert by Madonna! Later we went to Oxford Street and bought something for our friends. At the Hard Rock Café we bought a t-shirt for each of us. Then we met at Madame Tussaud’s to take photos of a lot of famous people, but of course they were wax figures. In the Chamber of Horrors some “wax figures” began to walk and frightened us. There was a lot of screaming. After the visit we went to the National Gallery where you can see many paintings by famous artists. In the evening we travelled to Chinatown.
On Friday we packed our bags and went to St. Paul’s Cathedral. It was amazing to see such a big church. It was built by Sir Christopher Wren. He had built many more churches in London after the big fire in 1666. We went up to the top of it and whispered to each other in the Whispering Gallery 32 m away from each other!
After the visit we drove home with a lot of singing (the pupils from Gütersloh didn’t like that because they were so tired.) We arrived at Löningen on Saturday at nine o´ clock in the morning.
It was a great class trip.
